Devon Smith is a Metalworks senior at Texas State working on his Thesis Portfolio for the upcoming gallery showcase.
I began the interview by asking Devon a few simple questions:
Devon went on to say that in his three years of working with metal that steel was definitely his favorite type of metal to use in his works. Steel allows him to build bigger and better projects without them crumpling into themselves. He did say brass wire was a good material to use when creating smaller jewelry pieces.
Devon heavily focuses on the perception of the viewer in creating the new plane of space for his creation to appear as a window into another world. He said he uses his art as a way of escapism and world building, and that creating illusions is exciting. Devon is able to do this by manipulating and contorting line along the x/y plane and creating the hidden z-axis in the imaginary space. And this process is no quick battle. Devon says it takes him a couple weeks worth of work to finish a project he has started.
